People are encouraged to put a hand on each other and told that every action has an impact. A final vigil and multi-faith prayer service finished the day of rebellion in Parliamnet Square. Around 11am people on all bridges sat down in the road and blocked traffic from coming through and stayed till late afternoon. • 13 local activists locked themselves in specially made arm tubes to block the entrance to Quadrilla's drill site in New Preston Road, July 03 2017, Lancashire, United Kingdom. Protesters try to stop a truck owned by Pete Marquis, a pro-fracker and highly controversial local entrepeneur who owns a hauling company. The 13 activists included 3 councillors; Julie Brickles, Miranda Cox and Gina Dowding and Nick Danby, Martin Porter, Jeanette Porter, Michelle Martin, Louise Robinson,<br />
Alana McCullough, Nick Sheldrick, Cath Robinson, Barbara Cookson, Dan Huxley-Blyth. The blockade is a repsonse to the emmidiate drilling for shale gas, fracking, by the fracking company Quadrilla. Lancashire voted against permitting fracking but was over ruled by the conservative central Government. All the activists have been active in the struggle against fracking for years but this is their first direct action of peacefull protesting. Fracking is a highly contested way of extracting gas, it is risky to extract and damaging to the environment and is banned in parts of Europe . Lancashire has in the past experienced earth quakes blamed on fracking.

  • It is Tuesday and market day in Delafagi. People travel from far to sell their goods, to stock-up and to socialise. Hasna is 19 years old and part time health worker trained by AISDA. She spends the morning in the market to advocate stopping the FGM practise, a practice she as a young woman only knows too well the consequences of. She uses a megaphone and she does not mince her words, when she proclaims that 'salot', the Afar word for mutilation of the female genitals is bad and a wrong practice and must be stopped. Action for Integrated Sustainable Development Association (AISDA) work in the AFAR region of Eastern Ethiopia, based in Delafagi. The Afars practise an old tradition of Female Genital Mutilation where the baby girls has her clitoris and labia cut away and her vagina sewn up. The day before her wedding day the girl is un-stiched ready for marriage. Its a brutal and barbaric tradition which AISDA is challenging with great effect, now more than a hundred girls in Dowe district have been saved from the knife and AISDA is now rolling out the scheme in Delafagi. Delafagi is where the oldest ever human remains have been found, the found is thought to be 4.5 mill years old.megaphone and she does not mince her words, when she proclaims that 'salot', the Afar word for mutilation of the female genitals is bad and a wrong practice and must be stopped.
